Calais – Gloria Jean Gayton, 57, passed away Wednesday, October 16, 2013 with her family by her side at Calais Regional Hospital following a courageous battle with cancer. Gloria was born in St. Stephen, NB on November 4, 1955, daughter of the late Fred and Annie (Hartford) Fraser. After attending school in St. Stephen she worked in the tuna plant in St. Andrews. On October 29, 1977, she married Max Gayton II and they soon moved to Calais. In 1982 Gloria started bartending at St. Croix Bowling Club where she worked until she was diagnosed with cancer in 2010. She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Calais, American Legion Auxiliary Unit #3 of Calais, Milltown Legion Affiliate in NB, and St. Croix Bowling Club. Gloria enjoyed playing softball, bowling, darts, pool, bingo, and playing cards.
In addition to her parents she was predeceased by a brother-in-law Roddy Sears. Surviving are her loving husband Max Gayton II of Calais; her daughter, Tammy Gayton of Calais; two grandchildren whom she loved dearly, Dominic and Kaisha Gayton of Calais; two sisters, Susan Fraser of Pleasant Point, and Barbara Fraser of St. Stephen, NB; three brothers, Terry Fraser and wife Mary, Robert Fraser and wife Judy, and Dale Fraser and wife Bernice, all of St. Stephen, NB; brother-in-law Richard Gayton and wife Alane of Baileyville; sister-in-law Linda McCoubrey and husband Charlie of Calais; many nieces and nephews; numerous friends; and her canine companion Honey, and feline companion Midnight.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 & 6-8 p.m. Monday, October 21, 2013 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Gloria’s life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 22, at Second Baptist Church, 21 Church St., Calais. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery.
