Gordon Edmund Lord

Crawford and Calais - Gordon Lord, of Crawford and Calais, “flew away” to meet his savior on his birthday Oct 31, 2013 in Zephyrhills, Florida.
He was born in Milltown, NB Canada on Halloween Day, October 31, 1930, to the late Joseph and Althea (Davis) Lord. He left behind his best friend and loving wife, Marlene (Seamans) and five children: Shirley Hold and husband Greg of Stuart, Florida; Betty Burgess and husband Dan of Thomaston; Richard Lord and wife Ruth of Calais; Catherine Henry and husband Mark of Madrid, NY; and Deborah Niles and husband Bruce of Holden. Gordon is also survived by a brother Lawrence and wife Hilda of Alexander; and a sister Gloria Vining of North Windham, Conn; and by a special cousin James Davis and wife Karen of Alexander. He is survived by 10 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren; by his aunt Velma Vose and by many nephews, nieces and cousins.
Gordon was proud of his army service to his country during three years of the Korean War. He literally walked out of the forest of Maine one day leaving behind his brother and father to enlist into his military service. He attended a Ballistic Meteorology school after basic training where he learned to send aloft weather data collecting balloons which gave the humidity, temperature, and wind direction at each one thousand foot level. His service time was spent collecting this data for the Anti-aircraft guns to improve their aim on bringing down enemy aircraft.
After conclusion of his military duty he attended Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL under the GI bill to learn radio and television repair. Later he moved to Calais and started his business “Down East T.V.”, which later became “Down East Electronics”. He also owned and operated “Down East Homes” for 5 years.
He retired after 37 years and he and Marlene happily spent the cold months in Florida, being snow birds. During the later years they would spend the warmer months on Crawford Lake, and he would often say “We have the best of both worlds”.
Gordon remained active during his life. Some of his many activities were: Calais School Board, chairman; Rotary Club, Paul Harris Fellow; American Legion, life member and vice commander; Calais Area Chamber of Commerce, president; International Festival Street Fair, chairman and organizer; Calais Regional Hospital, director, honorary member, and board of Trustees; 1984 Arlo T Bates Community Service award winner; Calais United Methodist Church, Sunday School director; Calais Jaycee’s, active in Junior Miss Pageant; St Croix Historical Society; Alexander/Crawford Historical Society, 2 published writings; Crawford Bible Fellowship; Local Coordinator of American Institute for foreign study; Sponsor of a foreign student in his home; St Croix Country Club, director; St Croix Bowling Club, director; Calais Little League, coach; Calais Softball Team, sponsor and pitcher; Wrote history columns for Calais Advertiser and Down East Times. 1963 NARDA (National Appliances and Radio Dealers Assoc) Salesman of the Year award, creative sales; Shuffleboard, president & championship; Betmar Writer’s Club; and Salvation Army, bell ringer.
His love was always for his wonderful family and felt very close to them. He enjoyed spending as much time as possible with his children and grandchildren; teaching them, watching them, and playing with them. He will be sadly missed by all.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 15, 2013 at Calais United Methodis Church, 839 Main St., Calais. A celebration of Gordon’s life will be held in the church 1 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2013. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery with military honors.
