Charlotte - Grace Damon Hatton went to be with her Lord on the 89th anniversary of her birth, Aug. 19. A lifelong native of Charlotte, Maine, Grace’s life was defined by unflagging faith in God, staunch commitment to community, and unwavering devotion to her family. Grace served as treasurer of the Town of Charlotte for 60 years – among the longest terms of any elected official in the state of Maine – and was also a charter member of the Charlotte Baptist Church, where she served 62 years as treasurer. An industrious woman, Grace’s hands were never idle, whether during her years as a bookkeeper at W.T. Grants and Chet’s Transport, volunteering with the Charlotte Volunteer Fire Auxiliary or Ladies Missionary Aid Society, or lovingly tending the home she shared with her husband and true love, Merton Hatton, who predeceased her in 2001. She was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Grace and Merton raised three daughters – Sandra Hatton Sawyer, Linda Hatton Schreier and Nancy Hatton Marshall, all of whom survive her. She is also survived by sons-in-law Mike Marshall and Werner Schreier, grandchildren Edward Sawyer, Greg Sawyer and wife Kim, Amy Sawyer, Gretchen Deutsch and husband Joe, Heidi DiSante and husband Brian, Peter Schreier, John Schreier and wife Michelle, Brent Delnicki and wife Jean, Billy Delnicki and wife Jamie, and great-grandchildren John Sawyer, Hans Deutsch, Katia Deutsch, Cailin DiSante, Erin DiSante, Megan DiSante, Morgan Schreier, Luke Schreier and Ben Schreier, Micheal Grimanis, Grayson Delnicki, Avery Grace Delnicki. Grace was the daughter of the late Roy and Edwina Cambridge Damon. Grace was also predeceased by brothers Roy Damon, Keith Damon, Willis Damon and Laurence Damon and sisters Helen Damon Faucher, Rowena Damon Cousins, and Joyce Damon Cox, and is survived by sisters Ruth Damon Nuttall and Maybelle Damon Pratt and husband Bucky, sisters-in-law Merna Damon, Joyce Damon, Ruth Damon and brothers-in-law John Cox and Charles Cousins, and many nieces and nephews and their families. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, from 6-8 p.m. and funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the Charlotte Baptist Church in Charlotte, at 11 a.m., with interment to follow at Round Pond Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Charlotte Baptist Church, to which Grace dedicated faithful service and lifelong membership, or to Charlotte Volunteer Fire and Rescue, an organization cherished by both Grace and her late husband.
