Calais – Sadly this October 13, 2016 my sister died in her sleep at the age of 93. Grace L. (McKay) Meader was born in Calais on September 9, 1923 to William H. and Edna (Sprague) McKay. She graduated from Calais Academy, class of 1940. After attending commercial college, she secured a job at the Augusta Statehouse for 2 years before she was transferred back to the Calais Motor Vehicle Registry Department where she worked for 40 years.
As a young girl she enjoyed her membership with the San-Suci Dozen Club, St. Croix Golf Club, Orion chapter #45 Order of the Eastern Star, bowling and dancing at the Big Band Novilla and Timely US Canteen, all of Calais.
She and Everett married January, 1959. This added the outdoor life of camping, fishing, canoeing and snowshoeing. Their retirement brought winters in Florida and Arizona for many years.
Grace’s love for family genealogy along with her involvement with the local Historical Society remained until she died.
Grace was predeceased by her husband, Everett Meader and brothers, Nash, David and Alden. She is survived by her sister, Marjorie, three cousins, five nieces and three nephews.
A graveside service will be held at the Calais Cemetery family lot at 11:00 a.m., Friday, October 21st with Pastor Maria Guereca officiating. A time of fellowship will follow at the Calais United Methodist Church, Main St., Calais. Donations in Grace’s memory may be made to the St. Croix Historical Society, PO Box 242, Calais, ME 04619. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
