Obituary for Harley Clark Jr.

Calais - On Veteran’s Day, November 11, 2010, Harley Clark Jr., 79 years old, died peacefully in the arms of his wife with his loving family by his side at the Maine Veteran’s Home in Bangor. As part of the Veteran’s Home tradition to honor the deceased Veterans, Harley was draped in the American Flag, and escorted by his family and their staff. Harley was born on February 9, 1931 in Calais. He was the son of Harley Clark Sr. and Elizabeth (Lawless) Clark. Harley attended schools in Milltown, Maine and graduated from Calais High School in 1948. After graduation, Harley served in the U.S. Navy for four years and fought in the Korean War. While in the Navy, he married the love of his life, May Belle Cobb, and they remained happily married for the next 58 years. After being honorably discharged, Harley returned to Calais and worked as a carpenter on the Cutler Naval Towers. He then began a 39 year career with the U.S. Postal Service where he retired as the Post Master in Calais. Harley was a man of great faith. He was a dedicated member of the Second Baptist Church in Calais and the last few years faithflly attended the Bangor Baptist Church. He lived his faith to the fullest in all aspects of his life. Harley was very active in the Calais community. He was particularly involved with the local athletics programs enthusiastically supporting Little League baseball, the local Blue Devil athletic teams, and the Calais Athletics Boosters Club. It was important to Harley that every child had an opportunity to participate in sporting activities. Harley was also a member of the St. Croix Lodge #46 A.F. & A.M., the Knights Templar and the Shriners. He was presented with an award denoting his 50 years as a Mason. Harley was also a Past Commander of the American Legion in Calais. Harley was an avid sportsman and a registered Maine Guide. He enjoyed many years of hunting, fishing and guiding hunters throughout the Howard Lake and Nash’s Lake area. Harley took great pleasure spending time relaxing with his family during summers at the camp on Howard Lake, where they enjoyed water skiing, swimming and hours of fishing. On the weekends in the winter, Harley took his family to Howard Lake for snowmobiling, ice fishing and skating parties. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Norman Clark and Harold Clark, and his brother-in-law, John St. Pierre. Harley is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, May Belle Cobb Clark. Also surviving him are his four children, Teresa Clark Cassidy and her husband, Edmund Cassidy of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Glen D. Clark and his wife, Kristina, of Gorham, Lori Clark Frost and her husband, James Frost, of Brewer, Harley Walter (Wally) Clark and his wife, LaVonne, of Catonsville, Maryland. Harley is survived by his 10 beloved grandchildren. Ryan Cassidy and his wife Beth of Brewer, Erin Cassidy Lawson and her husband Will of Valdosta, Georgia and Meghan Cassidy of Valdosta, Georgia, Chelsea Clark and Alyssa Clark of Gorham, James Frost Jr. and his wife Melissa of Windham, Katie Franzoni and her husband Matthew of Gray, and Andrew Frost of Clifton, and Austin Clark and Alex Clark of Catonsville, Maryland; his much-loved great-grandchildren, Austin and Courtney Cassidy of Brewer, and Parker Frost of Windham; his sister Joyce St. Pierre and three sister-in-laws Eleanor Clark, Gloria Clark, and Kay Clark. Friends and golfing buddies in Lake Wales, Florida and Calais will be greatly missed. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to the doctors and staff at the Maine Veteran’s Home. Their dedication and the love they had for Harley and his family will always be remembered. Funeral services for Harley will be held at 11:00am on Monday, November 15, 2010 at the Second Baptist Church in Calais, with Rev. Jerry Mick officiating. Prior to the service, there will be public visitation beginning at 10:00am at the Second Baptist Church. Burial will follow with military honors in the Calais Cemetery.
