Obituary for Harold Dwight Carter

Bangor and Charlotte – Harold Dwight Carter, 89, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015 at a Bangor hospital. Harold was born in Lowell, MA on July 12, 1925, son of the late Samuel and Alice (Goodwin) Carter. After graduating high school he worked for American Woolen Co. in Lawrence, MA until enlisting in the U.S. Navy. Harold was a veteran of WWII, serving on the USS Topeka in the Pacific where he was involved in the Okinawa Invasion. Following WWII he moved to Charlotte where he worked as a carpenter and roofer while serving in the Navy Reserves. During the Korean War, he was called to active duty and served on the USS Worcester CL-144 in the Mediterranean. Following the Korean War, he moved to Haverhill, MA and then to Dover, NH where he owned and operated his own roofing company until his illness. At that time, Harold returned to Maine and lived in Bangor and Brewer. He was an excellent marksman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and boating.

In addition to his parents, Harold was predeceased by a daughter Karen Turgeon; a grandson Shawn Carter; two brothers, Edward and Lloyd Carter; and a sister Lula Wieland. Surviving are his two sons, Ronald G. Carter and wife Kathleen of Valencia, CA, and James Harold Carter and wife Allison of Huntington Beach, CA; four grandchildren, Kristin D. Carter of Palmdale, CA, Sarah M. Carter of Huntington Beach, CA, James M. Carter of Huntington Beach, CA, and Jason E. Carter of Huntington Beach, CA; five great-grandchildren, Jacob Morrison of San Jose, CA, Jasmine Herrera of Santa Clarita, CA, Ashlee Baltazar of Palmdale, CA, Catarina Baltazar of Palmdale, CA, and Nathan Macias of Palmdale, CA; a sister Patricia Dyke of Cape Cod, MA; three brothers, Ernest Carter of Dennysville; Arthur Carter and wife Cynthia of Charlotte, and Kenneth Carter and wife Ann of Charlotte; many nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Harold’s life will be held in the spring at St. Anne’s Episcopal Church in Calais. Burial will follow at Round Pond Cemetery in Charlotte with military honors. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
