Indian Township – Harold Joseph Lewey, 82, passed away at his home on February 4, 2015. Harold was born to Athion and Delia (Mitchell) Lewey on January 8, 1933 in Calais. He spent his childhood and attended school in Indian Township and developed into an active member of the community as an adult, holding positions as Police Chief, Lieutenant Governor and Governor. After joining the United States Army in his early twenties, Harold traveled the world and served his country for over 21 years as a corrections officer, military police officer and as a detective. Some of his favorite hobbies were fishing on his pontoon boat, playing cards and cribbage and spending time with his beloved family and friends. In addition to his parents Harold was predeceased by his wife Dorris Lewey; son Warren “Matt” Lewey; cousins Richard, Simon and Silvia Gabriel; aunt Mary Gabriel and uncles James Mitchell and Joseph Socoby. He is survived by his three children, Gordon Newell of Pleasant Point, Martha Lewey and her husband Joseph Pilon of Prescott Valley, AZ and Cheyanne Lewey of Indian Township; grandchildren, Heidi and Veronica Vey, Shane and Aneea Lewey and April Tomah; his aunt Doris “Smiley” Chapman and her children, Rick, Linda, Jeff and Gary and their spouses and children; brothers and sisters, Robert Socobasin of Indian Township, Brenda Castro and her husband Donald of Tobique, Eleanor Stevens and her husband Kevin of Indian Township, Laurina Lewey of Bridgewater, Athion Joseph Lewey and his wife Wanda of NJ, Wallace Lewey of Indian Township, Joseph Lewey of Mars Hill, Alice Lewey of Corina, Newell Lewey and his wife Jamie of Pembroke and Mary Hamilton of Indian Island; cousins, Roger Ritter, Clair Gabriel and Alice Snowman and his friend and caretaker, Judy Purdy and her children, Mary, Jessica and Rita. Visitations will be held at the home of Doris “Smiley” Chapman, 83 Hemlock Rd., Indian Township beginning Saturday, February 7th at 1:00 p.m. until 10:00 a.m., Monday morning. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Monday, February 9th at St. Ann’s R.C. Church, Peter Dana Point. Services by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
