Perry – Harry Arthur Shain Sr., 80, passed away Sunday, March 9, 2014 at Calais Regional Hospital. Harry was born in Calais on September 13, 1933, son of the late Harry and Lillian (Chisholm) Shain. He graduated from Calais Memorial High School, Class of 1951, and attended University of Maine at Orono where he ran cross country and was a member of Phi Eta Kappa. While attending college he was drafted into the US Army, serving in the Korean War. After his service Harry returned home and worked as a surveyor. On November 24, 1959, he married Marion Griffin in Machias. Soon after, he started his career with St. Croix Paper Co., retiring from Georgia Pacific with 38 years of service. Following his retirement, Harry became a full-time lobsterman. He was a member of the Quarter Century Club at Georgia Pacific; Maine Lobsterman’s Assoc.; was past-president of Cobscook Bay Fisherman Association; and served on the board of directors for Cobscook Resource Center. Harry loved the outdoors and being on the water. He was an avid Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots fan and enjoyed watching sports and Nascar, keeping an eye on the stock market, playing on the computer and listening to bluegrass music.
In addition to his parents, Harry was predeceased by his wife Marion. Surviving are three children, Sharon Lucas and husband James of Robbinston, Harry Shain Jr. of Perry, and Perry Shain and wife Millie Jo of Aynor, SC; two step-children, Patricia Becker of Perry and Wayne McGuire and wife Brenda of Perry; his sister Sally Nelligan of Calais; a brother William Shain of Calais; five grandchildren, Kara Mitchell of Robbinston, Benjamin Shain of Perry, and Natasha Shain, Joshua Shain, and Marrisa Shain of Aynor, SC; five step-grandchildren, James Becker of Portland, Jennifer Becker of Lincoln, Cathy Sawtell of Pembroke, Crystal McGuire of Perry, and Jennifer McGuire of Pembroke; three great-grandchildren, Alexander, Gage, and Ta-leisha; ten step great-grandchildren, Stephen, Isiah, Nicholas, Anthony, Gabriel, Aiden, Brianna, Nathaniel, Lauran, and Jody; many nieces and nephews; and his faithful canine companion Sadie.
A celebration of Harry’s life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, March 13, 2014 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cobscook Bay Resource Center, 4 Favor St., Eastport, ME 04631.
