Eastport - Hazel Smith, 90, of Eastport, passed away in a car accident on Friday December 12, 2014. She was born on June 2, 1924 in Elizabeth, NJ, the daughter of Carey L. and Emma (Parker) Allen.
After graduating from High School in Yorktown Heights, NY, Hazel drove ambulance for the Woman’s Army Corps. She completed nurses training at Stamford Hospital, Stamford CT, graduating in 1945. She married Howard C. Manley Dec. 22, 1945. With Howard's metallurgical work they lived in MA, PA, IL, OH, NY and NH. After his death in 1977, Hazel continued to live in Bedford, MA working for many years as an Occupational Nurse, including employment at Brandeis University and Digital Equipment Corporation. She continued her education by taking courses at colleges in the region including Northeastern University, Tufts, the University of Vermont and Middlesex Community College. It was in one of these classes that she met Vernon M. Smith, whom she married on Dec. 26, 1982. Hazel, Vern and their two dogs traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada in their motor home, often traveling for months at a time. Hazel's most joyful memories were of these travels. Hazel relocated to Eastport, ME after the death of her beloved Vern. Here she loved watching the amazing wildlife in her backyard , as well as the magnificent scenery. An avid gardener to the end of her life, she planted fruit trees, flowers and continued to have a large vegetable garden each year that she enjoyed sharing with others. During her last years she especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, often hosting sumptuous picnics beside the shore.
Hazel is survived by four children, Peggy Neveu and her husband Paul of Auburn, NH, Richard Manley and his wife Jeanette of Bedford, MA, David Manley of Mesa, AZ, and Stephen Manley and his wife Diane of Bradford, NH; grandchildren, Michael, Lynn, Paul, Dan, Pam, Kenney, and Shannon; numerous nieces, nephews and great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held March 16, 2015 at 1:30 pm. at the United States Military Academy at West Point in West Point, NY. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
