Calais – Helen Ann “Nancy” “Shorty” Carter, 85, passed away peacefully on August 11, 2015 at her son’s home in Calais. Nancy was born in St. Stephen, NB, on June 16, 1930, daughter of the late Raymond and Agnes (Coughlin) Short. She graduated from Calais Memorial High School, Class of 1948, and went for nursing training at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, earning her RN degree in 1952. On July 17, 1954 she married Gerald Carter Jr. in Milltown, NB. Shorty started working as a Registered Nurse for Calais Regional Hospital and later for Dr. Johnston’s office in St. Stephen. Following her retirement, she loved to travel, wintering in Daytona and Punta Gorda, FL, and summering at their camp on Pleasant Lake. Nancy was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Calais and enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and reading.
In addition to her parents, Shorty was predeceased by her husband Gerald; a son Dale Carter; her sister Gertrude Trudy Piper; and a brother James Short. Surviving are her three children, Cathy Rayner and husband Stephen of Spruce Head, Chris Carter and wife Elizabeth of Biddeford, and Ray Carter and wife Sue of Calais; seven grandchildren, Jared Bridges and wife Stacy, Megan Sayer and husband Ryan, Kali Rayner and companion Randy Libby, David Carter, Sarah Carter, Dylan Carter, and Taylorae Carter; three great-grandchildren, Ava, Peyton, and Carly; brother-in-law Frank Piper of Houston, TX; and a sister-in-law Martha Short of PA; special friend Kay Morrison; and her feline companion Snooky.
In keeping with Nancy’s wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
