Obituary for Herman Gibson

Meddybemps – Herman Lee Gibson, 82, died Thursday, January 18, 2007 at his home. Herman was born in Baring, February 12, 1924, son of the late George and Tressa (Langille) Gibson. He married Margaret Alice Armstrong on August 17, 1945. Herman was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army during the Battle of the Bulge. During this battle, Herman was wounded and received the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. He was employed by J.D. Thomas Inc. as a furnace installer and delivering oil for 42 years. For a brief time, he owned and operated Flying A Service Station in Calais. Along with his family, Herman owned and operated H.J. & K. Maple Syrup. For several years, Herman was the caretaker of Meddybemps Cemetery. He was a member of Boyd-Smith Post 9779 V.F.W., the Happy Gang, the local square dance club, and a former member of Sherman Bros. Post #3 American Legion. Herman enjoyed hunting, fishing, cutting firewood, gardening, and traveling. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Margaret; a grandson, Travis Lee Joseph Gibson; two brothers, William and George; and three sisters, Irene, Gladys, and Evelena. Surviving are his three children, Jane Greenlaw and husband John of Meriden, CT, Mary Greenlaw and husband Dale of Waweig, N.B., and Kenneth Gibson and wife Diane of Meddybemps; a sister, Verna MacKechnie of Milltown; five grandchildren, Robert, Shawn, Roderick, Alison, and Jason; eight great-grandchildren, Marcel, Amanda, Marissa, Bethany, Shawn, Donovan, Jaymi, and Lindsay; five nephews; one niece; his caretaker, Jessica Cross, which the family likes to thank for the excellent care and joy that she brought into his life; and his two buddies, Timmy Dickey and Danny Smith who were there to help him whenever he needed it. Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 Sunday at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A funeral service will be held in the funeral home 11 a.m. Monday with Pastor Bob Hinton officiating. Burial will follow in Meddybemps Cemetery.
