Inez Pearl Mills

Eastport - Inez (Gram) Pearl Mills passed away in Eastport at the age of 93 on Tuesday, December 16, 2014, with her family by her side. She was born on September 16, 1921, in Pembroke, to Eva and Charles Mills, who owned and operated the Red Star Inn in Pembroke. Inie had many fond memories of her childhood working with her family. In 1937, Inie graduated as valedictorian of her class from Pembroke High School.
In 1943, Inie graduated from Cambridge Hospital School of Nursing in Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a Registered Nurse. After graduation, she worked as an RN in Cheyenne, Wyoming; Chicago, Illinois; and Texas before returning to Eastport. She then began working at the Eastport Memorial Hospital, which later became Eastport Memorial Nursing Home, as Director of Nurses until her retirement at the age of 70. Inie was loved by all of her patients. Very often when women arrived in labor, they would ask if Inie was there, not if their doctors were there. She and Francis Loring delivered many babies before the doctor could arrive. Inie loved her life as a nurse and, for her, it was a calling. Even after retirement, Inie was still referred to as “my nurse” by many.
Inez was a loving and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She enjoyed spending time with each and every family member and friend and the events that they were part of. She is survived by one daughter, Judith Turner, and husband Dana, two grandchildren, Wesley and wife Heather Turner, and Christina and husband Gerald Greenlaw; five great-grand children, Cole, Chase, and Christian Turner and Drew and Madison Greenlaw; and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friends Jackie Davis, Elaine Hall, Louise Baine and Rita Norton, otherwise known as the Q-Tips. Together they spent many winters in the Shead High School gym supporting their Shead Tigers and Tigerettes. The highlight of her week was her Wednesday night suppers at the New Friendly with the girls.
Inie was very active in the Eastport Memorial Auxiliary and Board of Directors and the Shead High School Boosters Club and was a volunteer at the Eastport Senior Citizen Center, as well as Co-Chairman for the Eastport Fourth of July Committee for many years.
Inie is predeceased by 3 sisters, Hazel, Eileen and Marion; two brothers, Harold and Les; “sister” Freda Call; and “Grammie” Fannie Call; and several nieces and nephews, including her special niece, Dolly Burns.
The family would like to extend a very special, heartfelt thank-you to everyone who visited, called and sent cards and flowers when she was unable to get around. She appreciated each and every one of you. Also to Hospice for the excellent care and kindness shown during her illness.
At Inie’s request, graveside services will be held in the spring.
