Charlotte – Irene Mae Glidden, 102, passed away Sunday, January 26, 2014 in Machias. Irene was born in Lubec on August 27, 1911, daughter to John and Estella (Stanley) Goodeill. She attended school in Woodland and soon after married Norman Shirley with whom she had three children. She later married Eben Glidden in 1950. They moved to Massachusetts where Irene worked for McGregor Instruments as a Quality Control Inspector for 19 years. In 1972, they relocated back to Maine. She was a member of People’s United Methodist Church in Baileyville and enjoyed attending the Charlotte Baptist Church. Irene’s family was most important to her, if her survival until February had been part of God’s plan she would have been a proud great-great-great grandmother.
In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased by her first husband Norman Shirley; her second husband Eben Glidden; two sons, Norman “Ted”, and Richard “Dick” Shirley; a brother Everett Goodeill; a sister, Marion Wing; son-in-law, Bradford Hunnewell and her two favorite cousins, Chester Sherrard and Karin Gower. Surviving are her daughter Marion Hunnewell of Alexander; ten grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; close friends Al & Priscilla Ringer of New Hampshire; and numerous other friends including Liz and Paul Trouant of Charlotte, and Susan Plachy of Perry.
Visiting hours will be held Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, from 6-7:30 p.m., with a celebration of Irene’s life beginning at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be private in Round Pond Cemetery, Charlotte.
