Calais – Isabella Susan “Issie” Gibson, 87, went to be with her Lord and Savior Sunday, April 23, 2017 at Calais Regional Hospital surrounded by her loving family. Issie was born in St. Stephen, NB on June 3, 1929, daughter of William and Gertrude (Steeves) Libby.
After graduating from St. Stephen High School, Class of 1946, she married Shirley “Dingle” Gibson on July 2, 1948. After their eight children were older, Issie started working for the Calais School System as a monitor and substitute teacher for 14 years. During this time, she attended school at night earning her C.N.A. After earning her CNA degree, Issie worked for Barnard’s Nursing Home on weekends for nine years. She later went to work for Dr. Laurie Churchill in her office. Upon her husband’s passing, Issie continued working for Dr. Churchill until the office closed.
Issie was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church in Calais, joining in 1948. She was active in the Church activities and was a lifetime Deaconess, member of Brothers and Sisters for Missions, and headed up the music committee. Issie loved being active in the community and was a volunteer hospice worker, volunteered at Washington Place, and assisted with Church services at Atlantic Rehab. She enjoyed cooking, traveling, was an avid Red Sox fan, and spending time with her family, friends and going to church.
In addition to her parents, Issie was predeceased by her beloved husband; and a sister Ruth Libby. Surviving are her eight children, Ronald Gibson and wife Shirley of Calais, Mark Gibson and wife Shirley of Veazie, Susan Weeks and husband Tony of Scotch Ridge, NB, William “Billy” Gibson and wife Arlene of Calais, Shirley Ray Coburn and husband Barry of Calais, Herbert Gibson and wife Anne of Carmel, Trudy Gillespie and husband Bill of Calais, and Kristi Wescott and husband Craig of Calais; 19 grandchildren, Steven, Jayme, Andrea, Laura, Katherine, Michael, Billy, Katie, Matthew, Justin, Jacob, Terese, Torri, Zachary, Darcey, Macey, Kobey, Joshua and Morgan; 17 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and numerous dear friends.
Visiting hours will be held 12 noon until 2 p.m. Friday, April 28, 2017 at Second Baptist Church, 21 Church St., Calais. Following visitation, a celebration of Issie’s life will begin at 2 p.m. with Pastor Matt Burden officiating. Burial will take place at Calais Cemetery.
