Iva J. "Maude" Carter (Cummings) 80, passed away with her daughter Dawn at her side, on the night of January 6th, 2024 at Central Maine Medical Center.
Iva was born in Pembroke on March 22nd, 1943, the second daughter of Wilbur and Vivian (Rodgers) Carter. Iva was raised in Pembroke and graduated in 1961 from Pembroke High School where she won a full scholarship to Husson college, which she turned down to help raise her younger siblings and start a family of her own.
Iva was a hard worker and had many jobs throughout her lifetime which included: clamming, blueberry raking, picking potatoes, wreath making, picking periwinkles, working in a woolen mill, a garage, stores, and as a mail carrier, all while raising her own family. She also went to college and received an associate degree in medical terminology.
She loved feeding the hummingbirds and puttering around the yard and just sitting beside the fire pit with a fire going during the warm weather.
Iva was well known by the whole town and many of her kids friends considered her as another mother, which continued on with her grandkids and their friends considering her as another gram or as one called her G-Ma.
Iva was predeceased by her parents Wilbur and Vivian (Rodgers) Carter; her brothers and sisters: Wilbur "Snapper", Warren, Eugene "Bull", Berla, and Kathleen "Duck" Dowd; her children: Vicki J. Carter and Roger A (Dough) Cummings; and her life companion of 40+ years Paul F. Cummings.
Iva is survived by her other children: Steven and his wife April of Canonsburg PA, Dawn of Pembroke ME, Lisa of Richmond TX, Gary of Dennysville ME, and Diane of Dennysville ME. Grandchildren: Natalie, Baylee, Shelby, Derek, Kirby and husband Brooks, Nikita, Briana, Amanda, Jennifer, and Bryan. Great grandchildren: Zackary, Kylee, Tristan, Guinevere, Kailyn, Josiah, Kyra, and Dakota. Sisters: Maxine "Squeaky", Brenda, Krystle (Winnie), Jeannette "Jeanne", and Sheila. Lots of nieces and nephews.
She will be missed by Apollo the house guard dog, who watched over everyone at night and liked to sleep beside her bed.
The family requested that there be no viewing or service per Iva's wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the American Heart Association in her honor. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
