Iva Bernice Pettegrow, 90, passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2023, at Down East Community Hospital. Iva was born in East Machias on March 31, 1932, daughter of George Austin and Nora (Williger) Parsons.
Iva graduated from Washington Academy and on October 17,1948, married Neil S. Pettegrow. She raised her four children and later started working for Deering-Milliken at the Machias Textile Mill, initially as a battery filler, and eventually a smash hander until their closing in 1982. At that time Iva started working for Maine Wild Blueberry factory for 18 years. She then became a hostess at the Machias McDonalds, retiring at the age of 83. Iva was a member of the First Baptist Church in East Machias. While Neil was living, they were active together in the East Machias V.F.W., and for a few years a Cub Scout Leader. In her spare time, Iva enjoyed puzzles.
In addition to her parents, Iva was predeceased by her beloved husband Neil Pettegrow; four sisters, Emma, Helen, Myrtle, and Elaine; and two brothers, Bion and George. Surviving are her four children, Donna Sprague and husband Sam of Machiasport, Sheila Daigle and husband Roger of Plainfield, CT, Nancy Davis of Winter Harbor, and Stanley Pettegrow and wife Sue of Orrington; eleven grandchildren, Dawn, Douglas, Dennis, Joey, Stephen, Ginger, Chris, April, Nicholas, Patrick, and Dakota; many great-grandchildren; two sisters, Phoebe Rudder of Ocala, FL, and Beulah Axe and husband David of Jefferson, TX; and many nieces and nephews.
