Machias and Dennsyville – James Earle Howard, 84, passed away on Monday, June 12, 2017 at Bangor Nursing & Rehab. Jim was born in Lubec on April 18, 1933, son of Ralph and Nina (Mitchell) Howard.
After graduating high school, he joined the Army during the Korean War. In 1956, he married the former Rita Kilby and they were married for 61 years. Jim and Rita moved to the Dennysville / Edmunds area where they raised their family. He was well known throughout the area and worked for Harris Baking Co. for 19 years, and later for DiCenzo and Irving Oil.
Jim loved his family and made many trips to area basketball games with his family. He enjoyed fishing – and the ones that got away.
Surviving are his beloved wife Rita of Machias; a daughter Mary Sawlivich of Wilmington, MA; sons Carroll Howard and wife Susan of Raymond, NH, James Howard and wife Lynn of Crawford, and Scott Howard and wife Donna of Newton Junction, NH; five grandchildren, Mitchell and Daniel Sawlivich, Jeffrey Jardine, Heather Hamilton and Jenny Goode; five great-grandchildren; and a special cousin, Charmayne Tucker.
In keeping with Jim’s wishes, a private burial was held at Dennysville Cemetery. Donations in Jim’s memory may be made to Alzheimer’s Assoc., Maine Chapter, 383 US Route One Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
