Obituary for James Brian Soctomah

SIPAYIK and PERRY - James "Jimmy," 33, died Feb. 11, 2006, unexpectedly at his residence in Sipayik. He was born Feb. 18, 1972, in Honolulu, Hawaii, son of Madonna Soctomah and Dwayne Gibson. He graduated from Lee Academy in 1990 and Maine Criminal Justice Academy in 1997. He served in the New Hampshire Army National Guard, the Maine Army National Guard, the U.S. Navy and active duty in Afghanistan in the U.S. Army. He was also a member of the Reserve Service for the U.S. Coast Guard as a boatswain's mate. James loved the outdoors, canoe trips and looking for the big moose. He proudly served his country and his tribe, as a gentle warrior. Jimmy loved his canine companion, Muwin. He is survived by his mother, Madonna Soctomah and husband, Leonard Kenny, of Bangor; father, Carmen Dwayne Gibson and his wife, Christine, of Oxnard, Calif.; one daughter, Brooke Sipusis Cleaves of Sipayik; one brother, David Soctomah of Indian Island; four sisters, Patricia Houghton and her husband, Edward, of Lee, Susan Holmes and her husband, Steven, of Glenburn, Debra Doll of San Diego, Calif. and Jessica Gibson of Calabassis, Calif.; paternal grandmother, Jesse Bell Gibson of Muskogee, Okla.; seven aunts, Nancy Lewey and her husband, Dennis, of Sipayik, Sonja Dana and her husband, Samuel, of Indian Township, Gail Dana of Hampden, Laura Dana and Marilyn Francis, both of Sipayik, Sheila Ricker and her husband, Peter, of Perry, Ann Faugno and Ted of Stamford, Conn., Linda Frame of Tulsa, Okla., Barbara Shrinch of Wagoner, Okla.; four uncles, Donald and Mark Soctomah, both of Indian Township, Ralph Dana and his wife, Nicole, of Sipayik, Michael Bassett and his wife, Jane, of Lowell, Mass.; several nieces, nephews and cousins who he loved and admired. Especially close to him were Everett and Dana Houghton Michael Roberts, Steven and Sienna Soctomah-Holmes and Colby Lewey. He was pre-deceased by his maternal grandparents, Gertrude Soctomah and Ralph F. Dana of Sipayik; paternal grandfather, Carmen Gibson of Muskogee, Okla.; and his uncle, Glenn Dana of Sipayik. He will also be sadly missed by his fiance, Heidi Stevens; and very dear friends, Roland, Leroy, Roland Jr. and Greg Newell. Friends may call or visit 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 14, through 9 a.m. Thursday, at Dennis and Nancy Lewey's residence in Sipayik. Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, at St. Anne's Catholic Church, Pleasant Point. Burial services will be at the Tribal Cemetery immediately following the Mass.
