Calais – Jean Marie (Chaffee) Johnson, 84, passed away Friday, September 4, 2020 at her son and daughter's-in-law home with family at her side. Jean was born in Calais on December 7, 1935, daughter of John Willard and Bernice (McKnight) Chaffee.
Jean graduated from Calais Memorial High School, Class of 1954. On April 7, 1955 she married Rosco Johnson and together they started Johnson’s Hardware Store, which she was actively involved in for over 50 years.
In addition to her parents, John & Bernice, Jean was predeceased by a daughter, Cynthia Tinker; a son, John Johnson; her twin sister, Joan Yates; three brothers, Gerald Chaffee, Philip “Bud” Chaffee and Ralph Chaffee and her sisters-in-law, Marice Chaffee and Barbara Chaffee.
Surviving are two sons, Norman Johnson and his wife Michelle of Calais and David Johnson and his wife, Vera of Calais; grandchildren, Emily Prichett and her husband Scott, Jillian Johnson and Lainey Johnson; a brother, John Chaffee and many nieces, nephews and special friends.
Jean loved to play bingo, go to the casinos, visit her home in Florida and above all, spend time with her friends and family. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Calais and the Pythian Sisters since 1958 and a long-time member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Sherman Brothers Unit 3, Eastern Star and the Rainbow Girls.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of one’s choice. Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 6-8 on Friday, September 11th at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A graveside service will follow on September 12th at 11:00 am, at Calais Cemetery.
