Jethro Nutt Matthews

Eastport – Jethro N. Matthews, 89, passed away with his family by his side on Saturday, August 08, 2009 at the Calais Regional Hospital. Jethro was born in Eastport on May 29, 1920, son of the late Seward and Ellen (Leighton) Matthews. He was born, raised and lived most of his life at his family home on High St. in Eastport. Jethro was known as Dad to his children, Matt to his Portland friends and Grey Dart to his CB friends. He dedicated his life to raising his three children after their mother passed away. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Lois (Webb) Matthews; two brothers, Seward Matthews Jr. and Kenneth Matthews; and a daughter, Dorothy Jean Matthews. Surviving are his four sons and two daughters, John Matthews and his wife Kim of China, ME, Herman Matthews of Eastport, Robert Matthews of Arizona, Richard Matthews of Portland, Ruth Avery and her husband Larry of Eastport, and Carole Smith of Tampa, FL; a special granddaughter, Lily; a special sister-in-law Zettie; and numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Bayside Cemetery in Eastport with Pastor Mark Edward officiating. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais & Eastport.
