Calais

Joan Alberta Miller, 85, passed away peacefully with family by her side on Saturday, May 18, 2024, at Northern Light Maine Coast Hospital in Ellsworth.   Joan was born in St. Stephen, NB, on January 15, 1939, daughter of Edward and Grenva “Tooie” (Craft) Hall.

After graduating from high school in St. Stephen, NB, Joan enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force where she served as a dental hygienist.  While home on leave, she met her future husband, Ronald Miller.  Following her service, they were united in marriage on June 4, 1960.  With Ronald being a career U.S. Army helicopter pilot, they lived in Germany and throughout the United States.  Following his retirement, Ronald and Joan moved back to Calais in 1978.   Joan was a volunteer secretary for CHCS in Calais, and from 1985 to 1990 she worked as assistant secretary for Cook Cove Psychological Associates.  After Ronald passed in 2002, she worked as a part-time chef for The Calais Children’s Project where she was beloved by the residents.  

Joan was active in the community and was a member of the St. Croix Garden Club, St. Croix Historical Society, and treasurer of the St. Croix Benevolent Society.  She loved the outdoors and gardening.  Joan enjoyed cooking and baking, especially for others, poetry, painting, reading, and spending time with family and friends.  She was always up for an occasional tea party with special friends.   

In addition to her parents, Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Lt. Col. Ronald Miller; brother-in-law Robert Miller; and two nephews, Robert Miller Jr. and Timothy Miller.  Surviving are her two children, Ronald “Todd” Miller and wife Sherri of Wasilla, AK, and Laury Luros and companion Eric of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Derek, Evan and Benjamin Miller of Wasilla, AK, and Shannon Baun and husband Scott, and Olivia and Madison Luros, of Indianapolis, IN; great-grandchildren Cyrus, Aria, and Michael; brother Edward Hall and wife Vienna (Moorcroft) of Woodstock, NB; sister-in-law Judith Miller of Grand Lake Stream; and many nieces, nephews, and numerous special friends.

A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Calais Cemetery.   Donations in Joan’s memory may be made to the St. Croix Benevolent Society, St. Croix Garden Club, or the St. Croix Historical Society.  Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
