John Michael Helmstadter, a beloved husband, father, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday October 17, 2024, with his cherished papillon, Pipi, by his side. Born on December 2, 1942, in Pittsburgh, PA, he was the son of Richard and Dorothy (Hicks) Helmstadter.

John's deep appreciation for the great outdoors took him to Maine, where he graduated from Ricker College in Houlton with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. His professional journey began in the bustling streets of New York City, where he worked for the Department of Health & Services and drove a taxi. This path led him to become a social worker at a hospital in Claremont, New Hampshire, a role from which he would eventually retire. His thirst for knowledge propelled him to continue his education at Antioch College in Ohio, earning a master’s degree in psychology.

In Maine, John embarked on a second career as a crisis counselor at Miles Hospital in Damariscotta and later served as a substance abuse counselor at Safe Harbor Hospital. Together with his wife Pamela, he founded Helmstadter Counselor Services, extending their support to communities in Calais, Machias, and Alexander. In his later years, John continued to make a difference as a counselor at the Indian Township Medical Center until his retirement.

A passionate outdoorsman, John found joy in hiking, camping, and boating, often accompanied by his loyal dogs. His love for nature was epitomized in his younger days when he bravely ran the entire Green Mountain range in New England, a testament to his adventurous spirit.

John will be deeply missed by those who knew him. He is predeceased by his parents and three brothers, Tom, Richard, and Dan. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Pamela Helmstadter of Alexander; two sons, John Riker and his wife Jeanette of New Hampshire, and Robert Riker and his wife Rachel of Massachusetts; three grandchildren, Jamieson, Jacob, and Katrina; his brother, David Helmstadter of Massachusetts; his brother-in-law, Bill Knapp and his wife Valerie of Ohio; along with many nieces, nephews, and his faithful canine companions, Pipi and Lucy.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
