Cooper - John David Howe, 92, passed peacefully with his family in attendance on July 6, 2020. He was born in Charlotte, ME on Oct 1, 1927, to Lee F. and Mildred (Morton) Howe. He is survived by sons John and wife Valerie of Chesapeake VA, Norman and wife Linda of Cooper, ME, his daughters Cheryl Roberts of Yarmouth, ME and Laurie and husband Glenn Tyler of Raymond, ME, eleven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and one niece. He was predeceased by his parents, his wife Ellen, a brother Allen and son-in-law Richard “Dick” Roberts.
John graduated from Calais Academy in 1945. He retired in 1989 after 37 years with the St. Croix Paper Company and Georgia-Pacific mill in Woodland. He was a 60-year Mason and Past Master of Crescent Lodge #78 in Pembroke. He was a member of St. Croix Lodge #46 in Calais and was also a member of Anah Shriners. He was a 75-year member of Cathance Grange #510. John served with the Cooper Volunteer Fire Department and on the Town Planning Board.
John was very devoted to and proud of his family. He always looked forward to spending time with his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and especially liked spending time at his sporting camp on Howe Brook.
A graveside service will be held at the West Ridge Cemetery in Cooper on Friday, July 10th at 2:00 PM. A Masonic service will also be held at that time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in his memory to the charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
