Obituary for John Thomas Rodgers Sr.

Port St. Lucie, FL – John Thomas Rodgers Sr., 78, died unexpectedly Monday, June 12, 2006 at his summer home in Pembroke, Maine. John was born in Pittsburgh, PA, October 8, 1927, son of the late William and Marion (Gibson) Rodgers. He joined the US Coast Guard in 1944, retiring in 1970 after serving 25 years. John was a veteran of WWII, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam wars. While in the Coast Guard, John served as a light house keeper in Biddeford Pool Maine, Sullivan’s Island in SC, Dry Tourtagas off Key West, FL, and the Hillsboro Light in Pompano Beach, FL. While serving in Maine, he met Gladys Young. They were married shortly after on September 5, 1948. John was a member of the Masonic Blue Lodge in Mt. Pleasant, SC, and the Scottish Rite in Charleston, SC. He enjoyed working on home improvements, traveling, and summering in Maine. Surviving are his loving wife of over 57 years, Gladys Rodgers; four children, Robert Rodgers and wife Debbie of Wilder, VT, Joan Hooper of Boca Raton, FL, William Rodgers of South Bay, FL, and John T. Rodgers Jr. and wife Shelly of West Palm Beach, FL; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais, ME.
