John Donald "Jack" Surles Sr.

July 6, 1940 — August 30, 2020

John D. “Jack” Surles, Sr. passed peacefully surrounded by family on August 30, 2020. Born July 6, 1940 in Lubec, Maine he moved to Eastport, Maine and called Eastport home. He lived in Brookline, Massachusetts and Punta Gorda, Florida until he came home again in 2020.

He is predeceased by his father, John R. Surles, his mother Marjorie (née Tinker) Surles, and his brother William R. “Bill” Surles.

He is survived by his companion of more than 30 years Janice Varnum and her children Teddy and Tracy, his daughter, Susan E. McPhail and her husband Rick. His sons John D. Surles, Jr. and his wife Kim, Christopher L. Surles, and Aaron K. Surles and his wife Kristy, his sister Mary Ann Suddy and her husband Allen, and special friend of many years, Dale Anthony. He is also survived by many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Jack loved the WACO diner, being on the water, and his friends and family. He worked with his hands as a fisherman, in pearlescence, and in industrial heating. In his later years he repaired small engines for his neighbors and friends. Jack was a member of The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks as well as community activities like the little league and the rifle club.
