Calais – Joseph W. McCoubrey, 74, passed away peacefully at his home on August 6, 2015. Joseph was born in Calais on August 20, 1940, son of the late Neville and Joan (Lawler) McCoubrey. Shortly after graduating from Calais Memorial High School, Class of 1959, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1986 with over 25 years of service. Joseph had a distinguishable career, serving three tours in Vietnam. He earned numerous meritorious awards and medals, including the Silver Star (V), 2 Bronze Stars, and 2 Purple Hearts. On March 10, 1972, he married KumCha Ha. Following his retirement Joseph became a civilian employee with the Department of Defense. In 2005, Joseph and KumCha moved to Calais. He attended the St. Croix Valley Assembly of God in Calais and enjoyed model airplanes, fishing, hunting, and spending quality time with his family.
In addition to his parents, Joseph was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur and Philip. Surviving are his loving wife of 43 years, KumCha McCoubrey; one sister, Susan Dooley and husband Richard of Baileyville; three brothers, George McCoubrey and wife Pat of Calais, Charles McCoubrey and wife Linda of Calais, and Lee McCoubrey and wife Ning of Springfield, VA; sister-in-law ChongCha Choi of South Korea; brother-in-law Taebong Ha and wife Kyong of Anchorage, AK; and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours will be held 2-4 p.m. Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A graveside service with military honors will be held 10 a.m. Monday, August 10, 2015 at Calais Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
