Calais – Katherine Louise (Thornton) Chambers, 69, passed away peacefully July 26, 2019 with her family by her side holding her for comfort as she left this world. Just as she held each one of us kids when she welcomed us into the world. Kathy was born in Calais on June 27, 1950 to Clifford Thornton Sr. and Jean (Russell) Thornton.
She was predeceased by both parents. Surviving are her husband of 51 years, Roland Chambers Sr.; her children, Roland Chambers Jr., Melissa Roussell and husband Dale, Tony Chambers and wife Helene, and Jackie Chambers; her three sisters, Mary Travis, Karen Frost and Ginny Moffatt; a brother Clifford Thornton Jr.; 11 grandchildren, Savannah, Roland, Kristen, Josh, Nathan, Morgan, Cassidy, Lena, Logan, Jessica, Kasey, Nadia and Alex; 16 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly; and a special person she considered a daughter, Fredette Brown.
Kathy went to work at Maine Indian Education in August, 1985 and by the time of her retirement in June, 2017, she continued her education to become Maine Indian Education Facilities Manager which included the Indian Island Schools, Indian Township and Beatrice Rafferty School. One of her passions up until her retirement from MIE was the Sipayik Elementary School. She was involved in the design and planning as well as arranging for the site location along with the school committee and superintendent. They broke ground for the school on June 14, 2019, and Kathy’s children took pictures to show her that it was all really happening and that “her” kids would now have their new school. This gave her so much pleasure. Kathy extended her family to include all her co-workers, especially Lynn Neptune, Wanda Barlow, Judi Johnson, Adele Moore, Lynn Mitchell, Amy Francis, Tahnee Neptune and her dear mom Patty.
The family would like to thank all the Doctors and Nurses at Calais Regional Hospital and EMMC for being so kind and helpful to Kathy and the family during this very difficult time.
A celebration of Kathy’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
