Baileyville – Katrine E. Howland, 78, passed away Thursday, March 13, 2014 at a Bangor hospital. Katrine was born in McAdam, NB, on June 16, 1935, daughter of the late Hartley and Abbie (McLaughlin) Sutherland. After graduating from McAdam High School, she married George Eales, whom predeceased her in 1961. In 1966, she married John Howland. Together they moved to Baileyville and she became a licensed substance abuse counselor for Calais Regional Hospital. Katrine was instrumental in implementing the substance abuse program at the hospital. She was an avid curler and was a member of the McAdam Curling Club. Her team was the only ladies league that curled an eight-ender at the Sir James Dunn Arena in St. Andrews. Katrine was also a member of the McAdam Bowling Club, Ladies Auxiliary, and the Spednic Club in Baileyville. She enjoyed playing bingo, pool, darts, puzzles, knitting, birds, and flowers.
In addition to her parents, Katrine was predeceased by her first husband George; her second husband John; two sisters, Thelma Stannix and Elva Dickerson; and three brothers, Roland, Otty, and Peter Sutherland. Surviving are her four children, Lynn Milburn of Calais, Jon Eales of Baileyville, Kathi Eales of Baileyville, and Shawn Howland and wife Lisa of Baileyville; seven grandchildren, Missy Campbell and husband Bryan of Baileyville, Michael Milburn and wife Aleisha of Calais, Meaghan Eales and fiancé Patrick Greenbaugh of Plainville, CT, Falon Eales of Baileyville, Dillon Eales of Calais, Andrew Howland of Baileyville, and Ian Howland of Baileyville; three great-grandchildren, Nathan Campbell and fiancé Jan Cilley of Princeton, Mackenzie Campbell of Baileyville, and Khloe Milburn of Calais; three sisters, Faye Clark and husband Ike of Nova Scotia, Hazel Hagel and husband August of Ontario, and Treba Humbey of Ontario; many nieces and nephews; two dear friends, Barbara and Eileen; and her feline companion, Miss Kitty.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A graveside service will be held 1p.m. Monday, June 16, 2014 at Woodland Cemetery, Ryan Rd., in Baileyville. A memorial service will also be held at Rockland Cemetery in McAdam, NB, at a later date.
