Pleasant Point – Kenneth J. Bassett, 83, died Sunday, March 16, 2008. Kenneth was born in Pleasant Point on February 1, 1925, son of George and Margaret (Polis) Bassett Sr. After graduating from high school, he entered the US Army, serving in Normandy as a medic during WWII. After the war, Kenneth enlisted in the US Marine Corps as a MP. He served in the Battle of Chosen Reservoir, where he was captured and held as a POW for 2 years and nine months. Kenneth was predeceased by his wife, Veronica (Tomah) Bassett; a son, Elvis; and a sister, Frances. Surviving are his children, Sophia Paul, Jamie Murphy, Travis Murphy, Gidget Newell, Joyce Doten, Robert Tomah, Kenneth Murphy, and Brenda Breeze; two brothers, George Jr. and Lane Bassett; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Friends may call starting 12 noon on Wednesday until 9 a.m. Thursday at his home, 31 Back Rd., Pleasant Point. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann Catholic Church, Pleasant Point. Burial will follow in the Tribal Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
