Calais – Lawrence C. Carter Jr. 76, died Monday, February 27, 2006 at a Calais nursing home. Larry was born in Calais, May 24, 1929, son of the late Lawrence C. and Sadie (Wattingham) Carter Sr. He served in the US Army and married Maida G. Crossman in South Portland on June 1, 1952. Larry was employed as a truck driver for Hannafords, retiring in 1991. He attended the Crawford Bible Fellowship in Crawford and enjoyed woodworking, the outdoors, and had a passion for farming. Besides his parents, Larry was predeceased by his foster parents, Gordon and Inez Lewis; three sisters, Rosamond Lewis, Elizabeth Smythe, and Edith Cunningham; and five brothers, Harry, Mathius, and Walter Lewis, and Sterling and James Carter. Surviving are his loving wife of over 53 years, Maida; two children, Lawrence D. Carter of Machias and Cynthia Berube and husband David of Parrish, FL; a grandson Matthew Berube; three sisters, Grace Richardson of Dayton, and Betty Getchell and Agnes Friss, both of East Hartford, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call Saturday, March 4, at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais from 10 – 11 a.m., at which time a funeral service will be held with Pastor Lee Cross officiating. Burial will be held at South Princeton Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers, donations in Larry’s memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1 Main St., Suite 300, Topsham, ME 04086.
