Obituary for Leila Doreen Hartford

Baileyville – Leila Doreen “Dolly” Hartford, 83, passed away peacefully December 4, 2015 surrounded by her loving family. Dolly was born in Westville, Nova Scotia, delivered by her grandmother, on October 14, 1932, daughter of the late John and Margaret (Stewart) Brown. As a teen she worked at Ganong’s in St. Stephen, as well as the local cotton mill, and later at Ware Knitters in Calais. Dolly also worked for National Semi Conductor in Connecticut before returning home where she worked for Georgia Pacific, being the first woman to work in the Grinding Room. In later years she worked as a waitress, retiring in 1991 from Calais Motor Inn. Her children looked up to her as their hero, for her hard work ethic and her devotion to her family.

In addition to her parents, Dolly was predeceased by an infant son Philip; sister Christena (Hanson) Davis; brother, Donald Brown; sister-in-law Anna Brown; and nephews John Hanson, Kenneth Brown, and Ernest Brown. Surviving are her three daugthers, Linda and Hubba of Baileyville, Marna and Darryl of Baileyville and Heidi and Dave of Rhode Island; two sons, Billy and Kelly of Bangor, and Paul of Baileyville; grandchildren, Tena, Tanya, Tyson, Trista, Tiffany, Tiana, Aaron, Tanner, Tyler, and Travis; great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Tova, Leah, Daniel, Elaine, Shea, Ryley, Sadie, Hailey, Landon, Brendan, Ava, and Mya; a great-great grandchild Scarlett; brother Murdoch Brown of Calais; sister Dale Moyes and husband Russell of Ontario, Canada; sister-in-law Sylvia Brown of Baileyville; her canine companion Spencer; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The family would like to thank Dr. Wilkinson, Dr. Riera, and the staff at Calais Regional Hospital for the excellent care given to Leila.

A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, December 10, 2015 at Woodland Cemetery in Baileyville. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dolly’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
