Baring – Lloyd Douglas “Dunk” Johnson, 90, passed away with his family by his side on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Calais Regional Hospital. Dunk was born in Baring on September 30, 1924, son of the late Thomas and Helen (Watters) Johnson. At an early age he left school to start working as a farm hand for Wilber Doten. On March 12, 1943, Dunk enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country during WWII as a Rifleman. While in combat he was shot by the enemy and was awarded the Purple Heart. In October, 1945, he returned to Baring and started working road construction. While bowling one night he met his future wife, Ruth Leavitt, and they were married in August of 1959. Dunk eventually started working for Georgia Pacific, from which he retired at the age of 62. He loved to stay active and was a member of Baring Baptist Church, Baring Fire Dept. where he served as Fire Chief, William T. Wren Post #23 American Legion in Baileyville, V.F.W. Post #9779 in Calais, Past Master of St. Croix Lodge No. 46 A.F. & A.M., St. Croix Chapter No. 17 Royal Arch Masons, St. Croix Council No. 11, Hugh De Payens Commandery No. 15 Knights Templar, Anah Temple Shrine in Bangor, Luxor Temple Shrine in St. John, NB, and Orion Chapter No. 45 O.E.S.
In addition to his parents, Dunk was predeceased by his brothers, Arthur, Melford, Thomas “Buster”, and Merle; and two sisters, Thelma Montgomery and Madeline Doten. Surviving are his loving wife of 56 years, Ruth Johnson; his daughter Susan Casey and husband Peter of Baring; three grandchildren, Danielle Guay and husband Jamie of Centerville, NB, Mary Pelletier of Baring, and Amy Casey of Baileyville; three great-grandchildren, Keegan and Kylee Pelletier, and Ethan Guay; a sister Evelyn McCluskey and husband Pat of Medford, MA; sisters-in-law, Bertha Johnson of Baring, Joyce Sellars of Calais, and Margaret Leavitt of St. Stephen, NB; brother-in-law Raymond Leavitt of St. Stephen, NB; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, 2015 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais, where a Masonic Service will be conducted 6:30 p.m. A celebration of Dunk’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at Baring Baptist Church, 47 Front St., Baring. Burial will follow in Baring Cemetery with military honors. Donations in Dunk’s memory may be made to Baring Baptist Church, 47 Front St., Baring, ME 04694.
