Indian Township – Loretta “Mama Kool” Mary LaCoote, 65, died Sunday, September 28, 2008 at Calais Regional Hospital. Loretta was born at Peter Dana Point on October 22, 1942, daughter of the late Arthur and Elizabeth (Dana) Sopiel. She enjoyed playing Bingo and spending time with her family and friends. Besides her parents, Loretta was predeceased by two daughters, Maria and Geneva LaCoote; and several brothers and sisters. Surviving are five children, Larry LaCoote of Summersville, WV, Dominic LaCoote of Brewer, Dean LaCoote of Indian Township, Elizabeth LaCoote of Indian Island, and Dusty LaCoote of Indian Township; a sister, Sylvia Sockabasin and her partner Nancy Polches of Indian Township; two brothers, Dyke Sopiel and Billy Sockabasin, both of Indian Township; ten grandchildren, Clint Sabattis, Lance Sockabasin, Corey LaCoote, Dylan LaCoote, Shawnee LaCoote, Katie Smiley, Nancy LaCoote, Lacey Sockabasin, Maria Sockabasin and Eleanor Sockabasin; two great-grandchildren; two God children, Maria Nicholas and Vicky Boston, both of Indian Township; dear friends, Martha Sappier, Doris Chapman, Marjorie LaCoote, and Eleanor Mitchell, all of Indian Township, and Edith Sappier of Perth Andover, N.B. Canada; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call starting at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 30, at the Elderly Meal Site, Indian Township, until 10 a.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Eugene Gaffey 11 a.m. Thursday, October 2, at St. Ann Mission, Peter Dana Point. Burial will follow in the Tribal Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
