Loretta Ann Verge, 89, passed away peacefully Wednesday, November 8, 2023, at
Calais Community Hospital after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family. Loretta was
born in Seymour, CT, daughter of Elwood and Florence (Mitchell) McLaughlin.
After graduating from Shead Memorial High School, Loretta married James Verge Jr. She started
her career as a secretary with Holmes Packing and then onto Dr. Rowland French and later for
area schools until her retirement. One of her greatest loves was helping to take care of her
grandchildren while their parents worked. Family was everything to Loretta. She enjoyed
watching the Red Sox, crossword puzzles, pictures and ceramics.
In addition to her parents Elwood and Florence McLaughlin, Loretta was predeceased by two
sons, Brian and James Verge III; and her six siblings, Clayton, Alice, Marjorie,Helen, Glenda and
Billy. Surviving are her beloved husband of over 70 years, James Verge Jr.; son John Verge and
wife Vicki of Pembroke; daughter-in-law Carlota Verge of Bangor; grandchildren, Morgan Verge
and partner Ethan Stevens, Sydney Verge, Laura Verge, William Verge, all of Pembroke, Christie
Fish and husband Josh of Houlton, and Jordan Verge of Bangor; great-grandchildren Sawyer,
Ava, Alexander, Eden and Bronson; many nieces and nephews including special nieces and
nephews, Tim McKim and wife Suely of N.H., Tony McKim and wife Wendy of Trenton and
family, and Nancy Carney and husband Bill of Charlotte. Nancy’s children Brian and Marjorie;
special cousin Sue of MO; and dear friends Judi Hanson, Jill Cline, and Judy Peters.
The family will be holding a small celebration on an upcoming weekend; more details to follow.
Loretta loved the Eastport 4th of July, in lieu of flowers we ask that donations in Loretta’s
