CALAIS & ZEPHYRHILLS, FL – Loring E. Stanhope, 76, passed away on August 25, 2013 after a long illness. Loring was born to Arthur and Elsie (Besse) Stanhope on September 23, 1936 in Robbinston. He attended Shead High School and graduated class of 1954, then served 20 years in the United States Air Force which included a tour in Vietnam. While home on leave Loring met Rebecca Smith with whom he was married on June 21, 1959 in Eastport. Loring was a member of The American Legion, William T. Wren Post No. 23, Baileyville. After his retirement from the military, he worked 24 years at the Georgia Pacific paper mill in Baileyville. Loring was predeceased in death by his father, Arthur Stanhope; his mother and stepfather, Elsie and Ford Matthews; brother, James Stanhope and two sisters, Helen Small and Kathleen Stevens. He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca Stanhope; two sons, Alan Stanhope and his wife Tracy of Simi Valley, CA and Brian Stanhope and his wife Angela of Charleston, SC; three special grandchildren, Jordan and Meredith Stanhope of Falmouth and Kaylee Lamoreau of Charleston, SC; a sister, Hilda Stevens of Eastport; two sisters-in-law and their husbands, Pat and George McCoubrey of Calais, and Shirley and Billy Jack of Clayton, NC; many nieces, nephews, special friends, fishing buddies and old friends from the Air Force. Loring was an avid hunter and fisherman and a man who knew no strangers. He had many friends in Florida where he had been wintering for the past 15 years with his wife. A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 3rd at Bayside Cemetery in Eastport. Services by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
