Calais – Lorraine Marie Mathers, 65, peacefully fell asleep Tuesday, August 4, 2015, resting in Jesus’ love awaiting the Resurrection. Lorraine was born in Biloxi, MS on January 10, 1950, daughter of the late Richard and Rose (Gonsoulin) Medlin. After graduating from Bradley County High School in Cleveland, TN, she worked at Mallory Battery Co. (Duracell) while raising her two sons. In 1979, Lorraine moved to Whidbey Island, WA, to be close to her sister and worked as a waitress and in an electronic warehouse. While in the greater Seattle area she met Arnet Mathers when attending a Seventh-day Adventist camp meeting where he worked. Two years later, on June 8, 1990, they were united in marriage in Yelm, WA. Shortly after, they relocated to St. Maries, Idaho, where they both worked at Laymen Ministry, Lorraine as the manager for their mail-order bookstore. In 1994, her husband Arnet was called to Illinois to begin his Pastoral career. While in Illinois Lorraine served as the cook for the Southern Illinois Camp Meeting and also worked for 3ABN Television Ministry in master control, and later as their receptionist. Lorraine had a gift for cooking and enjoyed cooking natural / vegan dishes. She enjoyed sharing her gift and taught cooking classes at a natural food store in Carbondale, IL.
The ministry took Lorraine and Arnet to Bennington, VT where she became a substitute teacher. During the summers for several years she served as the kitchen manager and cook for the Northern New England Conference (NNEC) Camp Meetings at Pine Tree Academy in Freeport. She also cooked for the NNEC Prayer Ministries Retreat on Webb Lake at Camp Lawroweld in Weld, ME. Lorraine was known for her gourmet vegan creations at these camp settings. In February of 2011, Lorraine and Arnet moved to Washington County, Maine. During the past five years she was the cook for the NNEC Pastor Bible Study Retreat in Weld.
Throughout the years Lorraine put together a cook book featuring her favorite recipes that she mastered. She developed her own system to prepare food for large groups, sometimes as much as 1,200 people. In addition to her love for cooking, Lorraine enjoyed reading her Bible and being active at Three Angels Seventh-day Adventist Community Church in Whiting and the Calais Seventh-day Adventist Church. Lorraine loved the Adventist message, especially The Sanctuary Message.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister Roseanne Medlin. Surviving are her loving husband of 25 years, Arnet Mathers of Calais; two sons, Thomas Medlin of ND, and Eric Thompson and wife Suzette of Cleveland, TN; a granddaughter Elizabeth Marie Medlin of Jonesboro, AR; two great-grandchildren; siblings Jeane Bryant of Auburn, WA, Dale Medlin of Cleveland, TN, Richard Medlin of Cleveland, TN, Patrick Medlin of Cleveland, TN, Susan Cali of Seattle, WA, and Burton Medlin of NC; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and dear friends.
