Obituary for Louise Savage Moore

Grand Lake Stream - Louise Savage Moore, 93, of Grand Lake Stream passed away Friday, Feb. 11 in her home surrounded by members of her family with her cat, Sybil, at her side.

She was born at the Greens Farm in Coplin Plantation, Maine on January 11, 1918 to Albion and Louise Danico Savage. She was the youngest of ten brothers and sisters.

Louise received her Normal School education at Farmington State Teachers College. She moved to Grand Lake Stream to teach school, and married Lawrence William Moore in Grand Lake Stream in 1941.

Louise is survived by her three children; Peter and his wife, Paula, who reside in Bremerton, WA; Perry and his wife, Jean, who reside in Hingham, MA; and Cathy Shamel and her husband, Bill, who reside in Grand Lake Stream; and a nephew, Newton Stevens of N.H. Louise cherished her six grand children and seven great grand children; Jonathan, Tawny, Karen, Katrina, Teresa, and Kevin; and, Zachary, Alexei, Madeline, Lucy, Nell, Mia, and Jane.

Louise taught school in Grand Lake Stream until the school closed, and in Woodland until her retirement in 1978. Over the course of her career she completed her education receiving a Bachelors Degree from the University of Maine in Orono. She will be fondly remembered by generations of students. Some of her closest friends include Dorothy Johnson, Edith Sprague, Bea Bagley, and Jill and Ed McGrath. All were a treasured source of companionship and support.

Louise lived by herself maintaining her own home until her death, and remained active her entire life. She was an avid reader and enjoyed discussing books. She was a celebrated quilter. Each of her grand children and great grand children has an heirloom she created. She took great pride in creating and donating a quilt every year to benefit the Grand Lake Stream Folk Art Festival. Louise attended the Union Congregational Church in Grand Lake Stream and was a member of the Eastern Star and several organizations dedicated to the welfare of animals.

Louise loved spring, and the blooming of the rhodora renewed her spirit each year. Family and friends will gather in the spring to celebrate Louise's life. Her family has requested donations in her memory be made to PAWS Animal Shelter, PO Box 182, Calais, ME 04619. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
