Obituary for Mae Osgood Gee

Crawford – Mae Osgood Smith Gee, 69, passed away on Thursday, March 3, 2011 at her home with her loving family by her side following a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. Mae was born in St. John, N.B., on May 28, 1941, daughter of the late Virgil and Azalia (Osgood) Smith. She graduated from Woodland High School, Class of 1959, and from the University of Maine in Orono with a B.S. in Nursing. While attending the University of Maine, she met the love of her life, George F. Gee, and they were married on August 31, 1963 in Woodland. While George was in the Air Force, they were moved to Georgia where she worked in Athens General Hospital, and then to Texas, where they had their two children, Valerie and George. They moved to Laurel, Maryland, where they resided for 38 years. While there Mae worked at Laurel General Hospital, and then went into office nursing, beginning with general nursing and later with pediatrics. After retiring in 2004, Mae and George built their retirement home in Crawford on Crawford Lake. While living in Maryland, she was a member of Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Fulton, MD, where she was active with the Mary Martha Circle, and served on the Citizen Advisory Committee and as president for the building of Laurel Beltsville Hospital. When she returned home to Maine, she became a member of People’s United Methodist Church in Baileyville, the church she attended as a child. She was active with the United Methodist Women and the Beth C. Wright Cancer Center Support Group. In addition to her parents, Mae was predeceased by a brother, David Smith. Surviving are her loving husband of 47 years, George Francis Gee; a daughter, Valerie Hagans and her husband Danny of Stedman, NC; a son, George B. Gee and his wife Arica of Chester, NH; two wonderful grandchildren, April and Faith Gee, both of Chester, NH; one sister, Barbara Andrews and her husband James of Savannah, GA; sister-in-law Alice Seggelin and her husband Richard of Halifax, MA; three nephews, Jay and Jeffrey Andrews, and Eric Seggelin; one niece, Lauretta Place; and many cousins and dear friends. Visiting hours will be held 2 – 4 p.m. Friday, March 11, 2011 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Mae’s life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at People’s United Methodist Church in Baileyville. A spring burial will take place at Belden Cemetery in Prentiss.
