Hampden and Baileyville – Maralie "Tiny" Rae Merrithew, age 81, passed away December 11, 2015, at a Bangor hospital with her family by her side. Maralie was born in Baileyville on June 2, 1934, daughter of the late Everett and Elizabeth (Strout) McAlpine. After graduating from Woodland High School, Class of 1951, she worked as a telephone operator in Baileyville, a time when the switchboards were in houses. Maralie was a member of People’s United Methodist Church in Baileyville, served as Warden and Esther in the Order of the Eastern Star in Princeton and Calais, and was a member of the Spednic Club in Baileyville. She enjoyed knitting, cross-stitching, ceramics, crafts, crossword puzzles, loved reading, but above all else, Maralie was an avid Red Sox and Patriots fan.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Calvin McAlpine. Maralie is survived by her three children, Lorie Merrithew and husband Michael of Hampden, Jenifer Merrithew of Hampden, and Jaynee McLellan of Baileyville; four grandchildren, Ira Perkins IV of Bangor, Shanon Corcoran-Bradbury and husband Justin of New York, Randy McLellan and wife Ami of Alaska, Amanda Stygles and husband Justin of Oxford; three great-grandchildren; a brother Barry “Bud” McAlpine of Baileyville; a sister-in-law Barbara McAlpine of Pennsylvania; a lifelong friend Carmen Sigworth of Augusta; and many nieces and nephews.
In keeping with Maralie’s wishes, there will be no service. A summer burial will take place in Woodland Cemetery, Baileyville. Donations in Maralie’s memory may be made to PAWS Bravehearts, 368 South St., Calais, ME 04619. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
