Calais – Margaret C. Higgins, 87, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010 at a Bangor hospital. Margaret was born on June 10, 1922, daughter of the late William And Elizabeth (Church) Frye. She graduated from Calais Academy, Class of 1939, and Normal School in Machias, Class of 1942. Margaret taught school in a one room schoolhouse in Brighton, ME, and worked at the Portland Shipyard before returning to Calais where she worked at the Ware Knitters for over 25 years. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception R.C. Church in Calais. She enjoyed reading, watching TV, especially the Atlanta Braves baseball, and having friends and family in for coffee and conversation. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of over 60 years, Ellery Higgins. Surviving are her four children, Peter Higgins and his wife Norma of Calais, Patricia Lowell of Phoenix, AZ, Kathleen Copp and her husband Charles of Westbrook, and Joanne Middlemiss of Phoenix, AZ; four grandchildren, Geoffrey Lowell, Natalie and Jason Copp, and Megan Higgins; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. Per Margaret’s wishes, there will be no visiting hours or services. Margaret and Ellery will be laid to rest together in the Calais Cemetery.. A special thanks goes to the staff and residents at Washington Place in Calais where Margaret lived for the last four years.
