Obituary for Margaret Frances Jones

Belfast and Eastport - Margaret Frances McNaught Jones died on April 9 in Belfast of complications from pulmonary fibrosis. Born on November 30, 1915 in Dannemora, NY, she was the fourth of seven children of Edith Emiline Boyer and Waldo Francis McNaught. Hers was a family of bridge players, and Margaret became a formidable competitor, continuing to play until just weeks before her death. She was a graduate of Waukesha High School and attended Carroll College in Waukesha, WI. She worked for Sears Roebuck and Co. and the federal government in Boston during World War II where she met Robert Harris Jones, a dashing “fly boy” from Calais, ME. Margaret and Harris were married in November of 1942 and resided in many communities until 1955, when they settled in Bethel Park, PA. There they raised their five children. Margaret was the founding president of the St. Louise DeMarillac Guild and took pride in the Guild’s critical role in establishing a new Catholic church and school in Upper St. Clair, PA. Early retirement took her to Eastport, ME in 1974. After Harris’ death in 1980, Margaret remained in Eastport for another 27 years where she worked at the Quoddy Tides and was active in community groups such as Eastport Healthcare and Literary Round Table. She was a lifetime member of the Eastport Garden Club. Her gardens were her passion and much-admired. She was rarely without a Boxer companion. Margaret was pre-deceased by her husband Robert Harris, and her son Robert Harris “Sandy” Jones, Jr. in 1974. She is survived by her youngest sister Joan McNaught of Bedford, MA; her four daughters Meredith Jones of Belfast, Patricia Manzon of East Coventry, PA, Susan Fredley of Tolland, CT, and Rebecca Jones of Mohnton, PA. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Margaret will long be remembered for her keen intellect, precise use of language, strict adherence to protocol, and generosity.
