Obituary for Margaret Evelyn Peabody

Eastport – Margaret Hilyard Peabody, 88, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at a Eastport nursing home after a period of declining health. Margaret was born December 12, 1917, a daughter of the late George and Annie (Collins) Hilyard. She attended Eastport schools and graduated from Shead Memorial High School in 1935. Margaret married Montford Hill Peabody in 1937 and moved to Lubec where they raised their three children. While living in Lubec, Margaret worked as the librarian at the Lubec Public Library. In 1960, Margaret enrolled at Washington State Teachers College, where she received a B.S. in Education in 1964. Her teaching career included positions at Rockland Junior High School, Shead Memorial High School, and Eastport Elementary School. Margaret was a supporter of Friends of the Library, Central Congregational Church of Eastport, and was Past Worthy Matron of the Quoddy Light Chapter of the Eastern Star. Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Montford and her son, John Hilyard Peabody; four sisters, Eudora, Lucille, Frances, and Sylvia; and two brothers, George and William. Surviving are a son, Daniel Peabody and wife Audrey of York; a daughter Alda Murphy and husband Gilbert of Eastport; two sisters, Mary Bates of Calais and Fredda Swift of Searsport; a brother, Thomas Hilyard and wife Jackie of Winthrop; six grandchildren, Robert, Rebecca, Brenda, Brian, Michael, and Andrew; and many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
