Calais – Marice Marie Chaffee, 83, passed away Sunday, July 14, 2013 in Machias with her loving husband by her side. Marice was born in Crawford on December 16, 1929, daughter of the late Rupert and Gertrude Day. She attended school in Crawford and Calais and on March 14, 1947, she married Philip “Bud” Chaffee. After her two children were in high school, Marice started her career as an inspector with Ware Knitters. She was a devoted member of the First Congregational Church of Calais where she taught Sunday School. Marice was also a past member of the Wesley Grange and the Sunshine Club for Crippled Children. She enjoyed cooking, camping, snowmobiling, gardening, canning, and dancing with her beloved husband.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother Leland “Pat” Day and his wife Norma; and a brother-in-law Arnold Beaupre. Surviving are her husband of 66 years, Philip “Bud” Chaffee; her two children, Pastor Ron Chaffee and his wife Sue of Orrington, and Sue Claridge and her husband Wayne of Calais; eight grandchildren, Rodney, Nathan, Jason, Troy, Catherine, Crista, Craig, and Cherilyn; 11 great-grandchildren, Brent, Christopher, Alex, Nick, Tessa, Dominique, Hannah, Grant, Jackson, Dustin, and Paige; a brother Truman Day and his wife Eva of Princeton; a sister Marilyn Beaupre of Robbinston; many nieces and nephews; and numerous friends.
Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 16, 2013 at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A celebration of Marice’s life will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church of Calais, 21 Calais Ave., Calais. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Marice’s memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of Calais.
