Martha S Cushing

Pembroke & Lubec – Martha S. Cushing, 91, passed away on Sunday, March 08, 2009 at the Atlantic Rehab and Nursing Center in Calais. Martha was born in Lubec on December 1, 1917, daughter of the late George and Eviete (Ashby) Sprague. After attending the Lubec area schools, Martha began working in the local sardine factories and later in the woods. She was a member of the People’s United Methodist Church in Pembroke and enjoyed gardening, sewing and the outdoors. Martha was predeceased by her son, George Sprague; two sisters, Flora Eaton and Mary Cleland; and five brothers, Daniel “Darrell” Barry, and Raymond, Howard, Harland and Alton Sprague. Surviving are her nephews, John “Jack” Robinson of Pembroke, Michael Sprague of Maryland, Robert Barry of Virginia, Harland Sprague Jr. and his wife Debbie of Virginia, Howard Sprague of Maryland, Donald Sprague of Calais and Wayne Sprague of York; nieces, Josephine Libby and husband Harlan of Machias, Patricia Witt and her husband Greg of Florida, Sheila Taylor and her husband Nelson of Massachusetts and Laurie Sprague of Pembroke; special cousins, Calvin Short of Pembroke, Sherman and Margaret Leighton of Pembroke, and David and Eileen Leighton of Pembroke; cousins, Percy and Leroy Burke of Robbinston, Donald Ashby of Arizona and Sheldon Ashby of Pembroke, and Eunice Bothwick of Calais; many great nieces and nephews; and special friends, Betsy and Dickie Coakley of Blue Hill, Sandra Nystrom of Pembroke, Cora Gagnon of Pembroke, Muriel Edwards of Marion, Basil Leighton of Pembroke, Victor Blessing of Massachusetts and many other special people that cared about “aunt Martha”. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Clarkside Cemetery in Pembroke. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais & Eastport.
