Obituary for Mary Rachael Johnson

Calais – Mary Rachael Gillespie Johnson, 82, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2006 at a Calais nursing home. She was born June 15, 1923 in St. Andrews, N.B., the daughter of John and Grace (Pelton) Gillespie. Mary moved to Calais in 1926 at the age of 3, where her father was the first golf pro at St. Croix Country Club in Calais. She attended Calais schools and graduated from Calais Academy in 1941. She married Andrew Johnson in 1945. They were happily married until his death in 1976. Mary worked at the Ware Knitters and at Johnson Co., the family owned business. She was a communicant of Immaculate Conception R.C. Church and a member of the Sherman Bros. Post Unit #3 American Legion Ladies Auxillary of Calais. Mary was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who found much joy in spending time with her family. She loved a good sing song and games of cards. Mary and Andy were well known for their get togethers at their home with their many friends whom they shared lots of songs and laughter. She will be remembered for her smile and the twinkle in her eyes. She is survived by her children, Gerald Johnson and wife Joyce of Fredricton, N.B., Michael Johnson and wife Bonnie of Calais, Paula (Johnson) Lumbert and husband David of Calais; eight grandchildren, Stacy Johnson of Fort Fairfield, Amy Johnson McCrum and husband Tim of Bangor, Andrew Johnson of Calais, Ben Johnson and wife Heather of Bangor, Abbie Johnson of Bangor, Nicholas Hinson of Death Valley, CA, Ashley Hinson of Cambridge, Mass., and David Lumbert Jr. of Calais; two great-grandchildren, Logan Leavitt and Roman Johnson; three special sister-in-laws, Lillian, Ada and Jean; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Andy, a sister, Eva, and a brother, Richard. Friends may call Tuesday, 6-8 p.m., at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday, 10 a.m. at the First Congregational Church in Calais with Rev. Frank Morin Celebrant. Burial will follow in Calais Cemetery
