Mary E. Kelly, 99, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2016 at the Eastport Memorial Nursing Home. Mary was born in St. Stephen, N.B. on July 11, 1916 and lived to be in her centennial year. She was the daughter of Allan and Florence (Ryan) Kelly. Mary attended the Catholic Parochial School in Calais. She worked in her earlier years at the Ware Knitters in Calais and for many years as a cook in local restaurants; including the Gem Restaurant and Madeline's Restaurant where she was well-known for her delicious home-cooked meals and desserts. Later in life, she worked at Calais Regional Hospital in the housekeeping department. Mary's greatest joy in life was her family. She enjoyed the holidays and family get-togethers. She also enjoyed Bingo, Sunday drives or just sitting on the front porch with her family. She loved getting ready for the yearly yard sales with her sisters and brothers that were held on her front lawn on North Street. Mary was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church of Calais and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her sisters Gertrude and Margaret; her brothers Charles, Leo, Lawrence, and George and two sisters-in-law, Madeline and Dot. She is survived by a special niece and nephew Teresa (Kelly) MacLean and Michael Kelly who were like her children. Mary’s love was that of a grandmother to her great-niece Ann Marie Flood and husband Ronnie and their family, Trevor and Shannon, Vanessa and David and their children Caleb and Ava, Mary’s great-great-great nephew and niece. She is also survived by many other loving nieces and nephews as well as a sister-in-law Joan Kelly of Calais and a cousin, Frances Armstrong of Nova Scotia. Visitation will be held from 2pm-4pm and 6pm-8pm on Wednesday, February 10th at Mays Funeral Home in Calais. Rosary will be recited at 1:30pm, Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Kevin Martin at 10am Thursday, February 11, at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Calais. Burial will follow at the Calais Cemetery.
