Mary Florence Phelan, 87, passed away Sunday, January 22, 2023, at Marshall Healthcare in Machias. Mary was born in St. Stephen, NB, on May 28, 1935, daughter of Joseph and Anastasia “Anna” (Brewer) Nickson.
After graduating from high school, Mary married her love, Richard Phelan. She worked for Fisherman’s Store and Grant’s Department Store, both in Calais, until starting her career as a CNA with Calais Regional Hospital. Mary was a Communicant of Immaculate Conception Church in Calais. She enjoyed c0ooking, helping others, and in her younger years, dancing. Mary loved animals and enjoyed her many dogs and cats throughout the years, especially her Saraphena and Sparky.
In addition to her parents, Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Richard Phelan Sr.; a son, Richard Phelan Jr.; great-granddaughter, Kiera Hartford; her three brothers, Bill, John, and Jim Nickson; and her companion of many years, Earl “Chipe” Greenlaw. Surviving are four children, Joanne Brockway and husband Donnie of Milltown, NB, Cathy Holmes and husband David of Baileyville, Robert Phelan of Florida, and Danny Dinsmore of Calais; a special niece who was like a daughter, Sharon Cooper and husband Gerald of Alexander; five grandchildren, Jennifer Hartford and husband Andrew of Milltown, NB, Samantha Roehrich and husband Danny of Robbinston, Ashley Brockway of Milltown, NB, Amanda Graffam and husband Rob of New Hampshire, and Chloe Phelan and fiancé Cam Burpee of Eddington; three great-grandchildren, Briella, Jaxson, and Colton; special nephews Peter Phelan and wife Andi of Dedham, and Lyman Phelan of Glenburn; special great-nephew CJ Cooper and companion Crystal, and their son Connor; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
