Obituary for Mary Blanche Sockabasin

Indian Township – Mary Blanche Sockabasin, 83, passed away on Friday, May 24, 2019 at a Bangor hospital with family by her side. Blanche was born in Pleasant Point on July 19, 1935 to Louis and Esther (Paul) Nicholas.

Blanche worked at Indian Township School for 28 years. All the children going through the school fell in love with her. She always had the biggest smile for everyone and knew how to make each and every person feel special. She was a cultural icon in her community. Blanche always took part in every Indian Day celebration, beating her drum, singing and dancing. She was a very proud Passamaquoddy and in 2009 was fortunate to share Passamaquoddy music and songs with Wayne Newell at the Library of Congress.

In addition to her parents, Blanche was predeceased by two grandson, Christopher Eric Blaney and Christopher Eric Nicholas; sisters Ramona Soctomah and Juanita Mitchell; brothers Andrew Dana and Moses Neptune; and a Godchild, Ramona Nicholas. Surviving are her children, Regina Petit, Laura King and husband Gary, Pamela Nicholas, Roger Sockabasin, and Margaret Cote and husband Shawn; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Sockabasin and husband Clayton, and Ursula Newell; many nieces, nephews and Godchildren; and numerous dear friends.

Visiting hours will begin 1 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2019 at her daughter Laura’s home, 48 Rolfe St., in Princeton, until 10 a.m. Wednesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Kevin J. Martin 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2019 at St. Ann R.C. Church, Peter Dana Point. Burial will follow in the Indian Township Tribal Cemetery. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Home, Calais & Eastport.
