Indian Township – Mary Verna Stevens, 72, passed away with her family by her side Tuesday, November 13, 2012 at Colonial Healthcare in Lincoln. Verna was born in Pleasant Point on November 28, 1939, daughter of the late Newell and Christina (Mitchell) Tomah. She worked various jobs in her life but raising her children was her favorite. Verna enjoyed traveling, playing Bingo, crocheting, knitting, basket and wreath making and cooking. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Glenda Folster Francis. Surviving are her husband, Bernard Stevens of Indian Township; five children, Denise Polches and her husband Chris of Indian Township, Danielle Taylor of Tucson, AZ, Newell Owens of Pleasant Point, Samuel Gilbert of Pleasant Point, and Ira Gilbert of Indian Township; fourteen grandchildren, Tara, Daniel, Gerald, Heather, Dachelle, Michael, Alexis, Simone, Felicia, Nipawset, Malsom, Gloria, Athusoss, and Cihpolakon; two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn and Asa; one sister, Alvera Farrell of Pleasant Point; two brothers, Francis “Frank” Tomah and his wife Frances of Indian Township, and Newell Tomah and his wife Linda of New York; and many nieces and nephews. A private celebration of Verna’s life was held at Mays Funeral Home, 26 Church St., Calais with Rev. James Plourde celebrant.
