Mary E. (Sturk) Stevens, 78, passed away Wednesday, January 14, 2009 at the Brewer Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Brewer. She was born in Pembroke on Sept. 14, 1930, the daughter of Earle and Clara (Stevens) Sturk. Mary grew up in Pembroke. She lived in Watertown, Mass. for a number of years where she worked at Raytheon and as a caregiver, before returning to Pembroke to be close to family. Before her retirement, she worked for several years at Hathaway Shirt Company and a shoe factory in Calais. Later, she worked as a caregiver for the elderly in Washington County. In her retirement, she especially enjoyed feeding and watching the birds in her yard, tending her flowers, and taking walks with her friends. She is survived by two brothers, William Sturk of Calais and Dale Sturk and his wife, Jane, of Oakland; and one sister Yvonne Carter of Pembroke. She is also survived by several nephews and nieces, as well as grand and great-grand nephews and nieces, as well as special friends, Jill Stevens and Gwen Clark. Mary was predeceased by her parents; her brothers Lewis and Paul; sisters Verna Newcomb and Elaine Greene; half-brothers Malcom and Burton Morgan. At her request, there are no visiting hours or a funeral service. A graveside service will be held at the Forest Hills Cemetery in Pembroke in the spring at a date to be announced.
